Natural gas is a risky medium
At NDS-Seals we make the link between availability of materials, construction and geometry for every sealing issue. This is also the case with seals that must comply with the EN549 standard. Such seals are frequently used in, for example, industrial natural gas installations and transmission lines for natural gas. The EN 549 standard also applies to seals in gas stoves, central heating boilers and natural gas cookers. Natural gas is a risky and difficult medium because of its volatility and flammability. A defective seal can have catastrophic consequences. Hence the strict standards that apply in almost all of Europe.
High demands on material and geometry
We regard the design of durable seals for gas applications as an interesting challenge. Our expertise and practical experience in advising on the choice of material and designing the most optimum geometry within the applied construction is certainly of use here. The vulcanised rubber materials, such as NBR, HNBR, FKM and VMQ (Silicone) are tested extensively and over a longer period of time within the framework of the standardisation. Among other things, the aging values are examined, whereby the material is tested under the influence of hot air, n-pentane and ozone. The material is also divided into temperature and hardness classes. Only elastomers that are highly suitable for gas applications will pass these stringent tests. For our technical advice, we often have various EN 549-approved hardness classes at our disposal.
